How does the claim process work?

• When you contact the Comptroller's office and probable ownership of the property is established, they will mail you a claim form. Follow the instructions carefully, sign the claim form, and return it to the address shown. Be sure to attach all requested documentation to support your claim to ownership.
• When they receive your completed claim form, they will review it carefully and compare it with information given to them by the reporting institution(s). They will contact you or the reporting institution if they need additional information. Once they receive all required documentation and sufficiently establish ownership, they will pay the claim and/or release the property. They generally process and pay claims within 60 to 90 days. Some claims involving minerals/royalties, stock, heirship, or other complex issues may take longer.
