To the Heirs of Ballí Spanish & Mexican Land Grants Texas Capitol South Steps - May 2, 2010 |
TEACH-IN: SUNDAY, MAY 2, 2-4pm, FRONT STEPS OF THE STATE CAPITOL. ______________________________________________________________________________ Our State and Nation’s History: The Texas State Board of Education’s (SBOE) recent recommendations for social studies curriculum revisions would lead to the absence of several key events, people and issues from Texas K-12 public school textbooks. Among the issues getting excluded are Mexican American civil rights. Representatives of Defend the Honor, the American GI Forum, the National Hispanic Institute, the Texas Freedom Network, Tejanos en Accion and others organizations will give brief summaries on the significance of the key points the SBOE has rejected. "It's crucial that we make a public showing of how unacceptable the revisions are," said organizer Angelica Aguilar, a graduate student in Educational Public Policy program at UT Austin. "It's important to our school children, and to all Texans, that we stand up and to be counted," said Taryn Ozuna, organizer and UT graduate student in the Higher Education Administration program. "If we can raise some awareness about these revisions, then maybe there is still time to affect change," said Laura J. Cortez, another organizer and UT graduate student in the Higher Education Administration program. Speakers will address state, national and international issues -- issues the SBOE has designated as not important enough to include in the K-12 curricula. We ask you to lend your voices, along with other members of our community who are taking action. For more information contact:
______________________________________________________________________________ Congratulations are in order for Ramon Garcia and Juan M. Escobar on their recent Texas election victories. Ramon was elected Hidalgo County Judge and Juan was elected Kleberg County Judge. They are both good men and believers of delivering equal and fair justice in the judicial system. We wish them well. Sincerely,
